Following the battle of Armageddon, the Lord Christ Jesus will sit on His throne in heavenly glory in Jerusalem and He will send His angels to gather the elect scattered throughout the world. 1

Also, at that time, all who have lived through the time of great tribulation will be gathered before the Lord and the redeemed of God will be invited to receive their inheritance; the un-redeemed will go away into eternal punishment. 2  This is also when Old Testament saints will be resurrected and receive glorified bodies along with those who were martyred during the tribulation.  This will usher in a period known as the new heavens and new earth (the Millennium), a period which will last for 1000 years.

The Millennium will be a glorious time, a time when the knowledge of the Lord will cover the whole earth, a time when the earth will be abundantly prosperous and beautiful; a time of peace (the earth will be restored from the devastation of the great tribulation to a time not seen since the Garden of Eden.) 3

At the end of the Millennium, however, Satan will be released from the Abyss (where he had been held captive for 1000 years) and he will deceive a great multitude, throughout the earth, into attacking Jerusalem; God will put an end to this (fire from heaven will devour this army.)  Satan will also be cast into the lake of fire for ever and ever; tormented day and night. 4

Next, the un-redeemed of earth who have died, along with the un-redeemed who are alive at the end of the Millennium, will be judged according to what they had done in life, their degree of punishment will be determined, and they too will be cast into the lake of fire for ever and ever, tormented day and night. 5 The redeemed of God, however, will dwell within the Holy City of God (the new Jerusalem) for all eternity. 6

As the apostle John wrote:

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.  I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.  And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and He will live with them.  They will be His people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.  He will wipe every tear from their eyes.  There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."

He who was seated on the throne (Jesus) said, "I am making everything new!"  Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true."

He said to me: "It is done.  I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End.  To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life.  He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be My son.  But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars - their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur.  This is the second death." 7
