In this life, there is hardship.  In heaven, however, all is changed.  Those in heaven, never hunger nor thirst.  The hardships of life never touch them for Christ Jesus leads them to springs of living water, and God wipes every tear from their eyes.1

The redeemed of God, also, dwell within a most beautiful city in heaven; a city known as the Holy City or the New Jerusalem.  It shines with the glory of God; its brilliance is like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.  It has a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates.  On the gates are written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel.  There are three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south, and three on the west.

The wall of the city has twelve foundations, and on them are written the names of the twelve apostles of Christ Jesus.

The city is in the shape of a square; as long as it is wide.  It is approximately 1,500 miles long, 1,500 miles wide, and 1,500 miles high; with a wall approximately 200 feet thick.  The wall is made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass.

The foundations of the city walls are decorated with every kind of precious stone.  The first foundation is jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.

The twelve gates are twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl.

The street of the city is pure gold, like transparent glass.

Flowing from the throne of God (God the Father), and Christ Jesus His son, down the middle of the the great street of the city, is the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal.  On each side of the river of life stands the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month.

There is no night there for the Lord God gives them light.2

All of this, and more, is the inheritance of the redeemed of God.
