What does the Bible really say about abusive relationships?

It's sad when one chooses to abuse their spouse.  Not only does it affect their relationship with their spouse, but it also affects their relationship with God.  Look what the Bible says:

"Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers."1

God expects a husband to love his wife and treat her with respect, not abuse her; He, also, expects the same of a wife.Likewise, God does not expect parents to abuse their children, but, rather, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.3

In all of our dealings with others, we should treat others as we would want them to treat us.  We should strive to be Christ-like in all that we say and do.4
