During the great tribulation, Israel will come under severe persecution from Satan and the inhabitants of the world.

Satan, and the other fallen angels, will ascend to heaven and war will break out.  The archangel Michael, and the holy angels, will quickly overcome them, however.  And Satan (who leads the whole world astray), along with the fallen angels, will be hurled to earth.

Knowing that his time is short, Satan will be enraged and try to destroy Israel.  God will protect a remnant of the Jews, however (those who obey God's commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus.) 1

At that time, two prophets of God will arise and for 1,260 days, they will prophesy and no one will be able to harm either of them.  They will have the power to keep rain from falling upon the earth and the power to turn the waters into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want; they will be an obstacle to wickedness, unbelief, and satanic power which will be prevalent. 2

After the 1,260 days, when their prophesying is completed, Satan will attack and kill them, and for three and a half days, their bodies will lie in the street in Jerusalem and people from every tribe, language, and nation, will gaze upon them and refuse them burial.  In fact, the inhabitants of the earth will gloat and celebrate their deaths by sending each other gifts. 3  This gloating will be short lived, however.

Three and a half days after their deaths, these two prophets will rise from the dead and terror will strike those who see this happen.  As their enemies look on, they will ascend to heaven at God's summons. 4

At that very hour, a severe earthquake will occur and a tenth of the city of Jerusalem will collapse.  Seven thousand people will be killed in the earthquake, and those who survive will be terrified and give glory to the God of heaven. 5

Shortly following this, the second coming of Christ Jesus to earth will occur (His first coming was when He was born to a lowly virgin, named Mary, in the town of Bethlehem.) 6
