While exiled on the Isle of Patmos in the latter part of the 1st century AD, the apostle John received a revelation from God about future events; things which would take place during a time known as the Great Tribulation or Jacob's Trouble

At that time, the inhabitants of the earth will be killed by the sword, famine, plague and wild beasts.

There will be a great earthquake and every mountain and island will be removed from its place (the whole earth will be shaken.)

Large objects will fall from the heavens (possibly large meteorites) and a third of the earth will be burned up, a third of the trees will be burned up and all of the green grass will be burned up along with the death of many.  A third of the living creatures in the sea will die.  And a third of the ships will be destroyed.  Many will die when the waters upon the earth become bitter. 2

Demons will be released from the Abyss, and they will torture the inhabitants of the earth for five months (except those who have the seal of God upon their forehead.)

Great multitudes (which no one will be able to count) will turn to God through faith in Jesus.  This multitude of believers will come from every nation, tribe, people and language. 3

Those who heard the truth of the gospel, and rejected it before the time of tribulation, however, will not be found among the believers who are saved during the tribulation. 4   Just as they will have refused to believe the truth of the gospel of salvation before the time of tribulation, during the tribulation they will continue to refuse to believe (they will believe the lie of Satan instead.)  Sadly, many, or even most, of those who turn to God through faith in Christ Jesus during the time of tribulation will be martyred for their faith.

During those days many will seek death, but will not find it; they will long to die but death will elude them.  The kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man will hide in caves and among the rocks of the mountains and call out to the mountains and the rocks to fall on them and hide them from the face of God and the wrath of Christ Jesus. 6

Also, at that time, an army numbering two hundred million will cross the Euphrates River, from the East, heading towards Jerusalem and a third of mankind will be killed. 7

Even after all of this devastation upon the earth, those who will be left alive will not repent of the works of their hands; they will not stop worshiping demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood. Nor will they repent of their murders, their magic arts, their sexual immorality or their thefts. 8
